Protecting our environment is a top priority. In Europe, all countries have set up a nationwide network of stations to monitor immissions. The main air impurities, e.g. carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide or hydrocarbons, are monitored. Samples are taken at short time intervals, and analyzed e.g. by gas chromatography. Continuous measurements are made with infrared or ultraviolet spectrometry. 

In order to guarantee a high measurement accuracy even in the lowest concentration ranges the measuring instruments have to be regularly calibrated with high precision calibration gas mixtures. In some cases, it is required to use calibration gases with a certificate from a laboratory accredited according to ISO/EN 17025.
